In this first book, the squire in question is named Terrence. He grows up with Trevisant the old hermit who sees time backwards. One day, Terrence meets a green sprite in the woods who leads him to Gawain, a man destined to become one of the most highly regarded Knights of the Round Table. Trevisant has seen the future and knows that Terrence must leave with Gawain to serve as his squire. Together, Gawain and Terrence go on questing adventures. It’s kind of like a laugh out loud buddy road trip movie except with horses. There’s also a dose of mystery in The Squire’s Tale as we readers try to guess who Terrance’s parents are and what it means to have fairy blood.
This reviewer has read the first four books in the squire’s tale series by Gerald Morris and each one is as delightful and engaging as the last.
