Maggie Mckay has three boisterous older brothers who make her life both wonderful and a living hell. The graphic novel begins on Maggie’s first day of high school; up until now she, like her brothers before her, had been homeschooled by her mother. Excited yet terrified to enter this new part of her life, she looks to her father and brothers for advice. Maggie struggles to fit in until she meets Lucy and her older brother Alistair. The three of them form a group of misfits while Alistair holds a mysterious past that Maggie’s brothers won’t explain to her.
The novel continues in typical young adult fashion: a bit of romance, humor, and pop culture references, but the twist is that Maggie is being stalked by the ghost of a nineteenth century widow. Mischief and adventure ensue when Maggie and her friends try to appease the ghost. Coming of age lessons are learned, friendships are made, and general cuteness abounds. Definitely check this title out if you liked In Real Life by Cory Doctorow or Anya’s Ghost by Vera Brosgol.
