Nobody “Bod” Owens would be an average kid–if he didn’t live in a graveyard with his adopted ghost parents. He spends his time wandering the grounds, talking to his ghost neighbors, making friends with the human visitors, and pestering his solemn guardian, Silas. As the story progresses, Bod becomes more and more curious about the world outside his graveyard home. But he’s warned never to leave, lest the man called Jack who killed his family comes back to finish the job.
The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman is a whimsically macabre twist on the Rudyard Kipling classic The Jungle Book. Like Mowgli, Bod finds himself wrapped up in a life that normal children couldn’t experience unless raised in it. Each chapter of Bod’s story is segmented into stand-alone adventures perfect for bedtime, if the reader has the spine for it.
