Mystery Men (1999)

mystery menThree super hero wannabes, Mr. Furious (Ben Stiller), The Shoveler (William H. Macy), and The Blue Raja, master of cutlery (Hank Azaria), are trying to break into the crime fighting business.  It is a bit difficult, though, when Captain Amazing (Greg Kinnear) steals all the headlines. All that changes, however, when Casanova Frankenstein (Geoffrey Rush), the most evil super villain Champion City has ever seen, captures the Captain and begins to wreak havoc on the citizenry. Our three heroes know that this is their big chance to show that they have what it takes.

They also know that they need help to go up against Casanova and his gangs: the Disco Boys, the Suits, the Susies, and the Furriers, to name a few.  So our boys join forces with some more also-rans like The Bowler (Janeane Garofalo), who has her Dad’s skull in a bowling ball, and The Spleen (Paul Reubens), who can devastate the bad guys with his extreme flatulence.

This comic send-up of the whole super hero genre has a lot of great lines and laugh-out-loud moments, but it can also schlep the potty humor and get downright silly.  All-in-all, if you are looking for a hilarious escape flick, this one will fit the bill. For those of you who might feel the need to justify spending 2 hours laughing your head off, the movie does have a good message about the power of teamwork and the importance of being true to yourself.
