The Sinclairs are a family to be envied. They are all tall, blonde, beautiful, and rich. Every summer they go to their grandparents’ private island and have clam bakes, roast marshmallows, and lounge on the beach. The eponymous Liars are cousins who resent their families’ hunger for inheritance and favoritism. While their parents squabble over the rights to the island and their father’s fortune, the Liars have their own escapades and adventures. However, after Cadence Sinclair is found alone and near death on the beach, everything changes. Cadence can’t remember what happened in her fifteenth summer and is plagued by debilitating migraines. When she finally returns to the island in her seventeenth summer, she is determined to learn the truth about that fateful night–but what she finds is far more sinister than anyone could imagine.
It’s not often that I am completely shocked by the ending of a book. When I finished We Were Liars, I sat in my living room stunned. I then quickly flipped through the book looking for clues and plot points to explain how the ending could be this way. It was all there; all the evidence I needed to make the deductions but I had been so wrapped up in the story I simply missed the obvious. I’d recommend this title to anyone with some time on their hands because I was unable to put it down. Lockhart’s writing becomes more and more disjointed as you reach the climax of the story, emphasizing Cadence’s emotional instability. Lockhart’s prose pushes you toward the truth, and I bet you’ll still be surprised by the final reveal.
